Kygo Live Mixed Reality VJ

KYGO LIVE MIXED REALITY VJ

Executive Creative Director / Creative Tech

Phones are ubiquitous at concerts, but not exactly loved by artists or fans. Instead of viewing phones as a nuisance, We set off to discover how we could make each phone an active part of the show. How could we partner with artists to extend their creative vision into fan’s phones, making phones a meaningful part of the live experience.

What resulted was the first live DJ’d Mixed Reality experience, delivering 2 hours of MR triggered live to synchronize with Kygo’s music and visuals, which played out in realtime to the phones of over 22k fans.

How We Did It

Rather than creating one-off MR moments that could distract from the show, we developed a singular MR experience that would react in realtime to the music. This created a frictionless experience for fans, allowing them to jump in and out of the MR on their terms, knowing that it would always be there, always be something new and exciting.

An MR DJ worked alongside Kygo’s team to trigger the effects much like a VJ or lighting tech does at a live show. We worked with Kygo’s creative team to make the creative change with each song to reflect the stage visuals and light show. The mixed reality experience extended the stage direction into an immersive 360 degree world around fans that elevated the entire performance, moving to the beat, building the builds and crushing the drops. The experience also unlocked fan creativity, enabling them to create one of a kind content that stood out from the thousands of other videos captured with a standard camera.

To help spread the word and ensure fans were onboarded ahead of showtime, we created AR selfie moments, like a QR code attached to Kygo’s iconic piano bench that would spawn his crystal piano in AR.

In the end, we activated the Kygo MR experience at 6 shows, to more than 50,000 fans who used it 216,000 times, meaning fans didn’t just check it out and forget it, but kept going back in for more.

The big man himself even captured the MR to share it with the world.
