DuPont N:OW Machine Experience — Director

DuPont N:OW Machine

Director

The DuPont N:OW Machine was a shared IRL experience that took viewers on a meditative journey into the Now. The immersive trip surrounded viewers in a vast world of DuPont innovation, covering every scale, from the microscopic to cosmic.

I was engaged to bring my VR experience and direct the script and concept into reality. Taking advantage of The Studio structure, I worked with the client, creative and visual fx teams to build out an 8K, 360 degree, 60fps, 3-minute film. Sound and music by cypher completed the meditative experience.

To bring the film into the physical world, a 10x10x10 dome was built for three people to share the experience. Wind machines and haptic chairs were synchronized with the film to bring the experience to all five senses.

Launched at TED2019, the 3-minute experience invited attendees to embrace the power of DuPont innovation that exists all around us, to inspire greater confidence in the future.

A Meditative Experience

I’m accustomed to working in a world of 60, 30, 15, 6 second films that fleetingly exist in a virtual world. The opportunity to direct a 3-minute shared meditative journey was instantly inspiring.

The result? A success!

To generate a meditative state. We started with human breath and centered the entire experience around the meditative pace of about 6 breaths per minute. We then prevized the experience in unreal engine and reviewed in VR so that we could control pacing in real time while being fully immersed on the journey.

In the end, over 750 tedsters went on our journey. To gain an even larger reach, the experience was then taken on the road in VR headsets. Standard 16x9 and social videos were also generated, allowing the installation to be experienced by those that weren’t in attendance.
